Our first year in Arizona we went to Montezuma Castle just like everyone else but never made it to Montezuma Well for some reason. That oversight has now been corrected, and it is very impressive. Yes, I was expecting just a pit of water but there are some ancient dwellings, beautiful trees, and a irrigation ditch dating back to prehistoric times.

The water has a very high content of carbon dioxide so no fish live there

These dwellings are up on the rim area.

This house is right near the swallet, thus the swallet ruin.
